As planned, I finished this novel right on my birthday. I knew to expect humor from Terry Pratchett, but I didn't realize it had a Discworld setting. Apparently, the titular characters had a role in Snuff too minor to mention in a synopsis or remember after 13 years.

Cut for length )

My next read will be a new birthday present. I'm thinking Six Wakes by Mur Lafferty.

Having a Ball

deckardcanine: (Default)
We have a lot of toys today, but still the best of all
Has got to be the unassuming, omnipresent ball.
You might object that all it does is roll and sometimes bounce,
But that’s enough to get a common predator to pounce.
And no, it’s not just predators: Consider horses, goats,
And elephants among the many herbivores of note.
It’s not just mammals either: Look at condors, parrots, crows,
Komodo dragons, even certain bees as science shows.
What other plaything offers such variety? The stick?
That often needs a human to produce a sort of trick.
And if we keep to human play, the ball’s still #1
For giving us millennia of energetic fun
In lots of sports and solo games, for babies and adults.
No other toy produces such magnificent results.
