There's another basement studio up for rent that I badly want, having visited on Sunday. It's about the same size and better in many ways, yet 20% cheaper. The main downsides are a less pretty vicinity and a lack of ceiling lights. Neither of those factors means much to me. I sent the owner an email with my job and current landlord info; hope to hear back from her soon.
When I told my landlord about my search, all I asked of him was that he give me a hand in moving the furniture when the time comes. He said he'd gladly oblige. He appreciates me as a tenant, citing my lack of complaint with regard to his noisy sons. (These days, they're about as loud when happy as when unhappy.)
But the most touching thing he said was that if he has any chance of not getting a divorce, it's because of what I'm doing.
