For perhaps the first time since early childhood, I'm not doing anything to count down to the new year (which will probably be here worldwide by the time you read this). I just can't get excited about it the way I used to get excited about the countdown to summer vacation in elementary school. The TV specials are invariably cheesy. I've already witnessed the Animal Crossing approach. Staying up to midnight is nothing special for me; in fact, I've done too much of it lately. Champagne doesn't cut it for me. I have no significant other to kiss. And we really need to find a second New Year's song. (I could write one, but how well would it catch on?)

Not that I haven't had a good time during my four-day weekend. I've enjoyed Charlie Wilson's War -- following right on the heels of the tangentially similar* All the President's Men, as it happens -- and then Juno. I got to enjoy one of my new video games; perhaps I'll try the other tomorrow. The part spent in mild preparation to move next weekend hasn't been much of a drag.

More to come tomorrow.
