One of my mailing lists, the Grown-Up Movie Forum, dissolved this week. I'm not entirely surprised, seeing as I and the founder were the main participants and there were only two or three others in its six-year lifetime. The founder recently held a multiple-choice anonymous survey asking why people weren't posting. Only three besides me replied.

What a shame. It felt closer to me than many forums I've attended, because I was there from the beginning. It helped me and at least one other decide what to see or not. In little ways, it changed how I view movies.

Now I have to decide whether to keep writing reviews and put them up elsewhere -- here, most likely. On average, I watch two movies a week these days, which could mean a pretty big change to this journal. I recall putting a couple here back in 2004, but that's about it.

In truth, I wrote too much for the GUMF. The reviews weren't always fun; sometimes they felt like an obligation that I followed out of sheer routine. Some were probably superfluous, given the widespread familiarity of the films in question. They could be viewed as an exercise in egocentrism.

My best bet, then, would be to write movie reviews only when I really have something to say. If even then. What do you readers think? Would they make my LJ more interesting or less? Or would you have to see before answering?
