Today I finished drawing a cartoon (offline as always) for the first time in months. Not long ago -- i.e., when I was less mature -- I would have blamed this on my job leaving my brain too tired for anything productive, but that's a stretch for excusing my weekends. I could have blamed it on the fact that the layout of my drawing/computer table created a psychological discouragement, which I kinda believe, but again, that's not enough. No, it was either laziness or just pure addiction to video games for filling my free time at home. And as often happens, I took a break from indulgence not so much out of a strong principled will as out of boredom.

Sure enough, my other big indulgence these days, and probably harder to give up, is also the other one I cut back last Lent: sweets. It's not just from the weeks leading up to and following Halloween. With my supervisor's candy bowl available to all, I typically eat about three pieces of something chocolate each workday, unless I bring chocolate soy milk and am conscious enough to count that. Then there are the evening desserts (usually Gushers) and the one or two Pop Tarts a week. This may not sound bad for a 22-year-old to many of you, but my teeth are starting to worry me. Lucky my worst tooth is designed for meat-eating, which I've restricted to a little seafood for the last four years. I'm going to start brushing at work.

I imagine that I'll have an easier time cutting back when I start getting serious about prayer. The more I study faith, the more important I come to regard prayer, but since I never really prayed until last year, and nobody in my immediate family does it appreciably, it's very hard for me to make it a habit. I should set a specific time and place for it; my inclination is early evenings on a living room couch. Not very traditional, huh?
