Watched An Officer and a Gentleman last night. It reminded me that I am still perfectly capable of enjoying movies with IMDb ratings around 6.7. But it also hinted at some unsavory sides to my personality.

First off, while the romance is good overall, the military training aspect was what really appealed to me. Mind you, "Air Force pilot" is one of my last choices of profession. Am I a sadist for watching the rigorous exercises and punishments with rapt interest? It's not like I imagined myself in Sgt. Foley's position more often than as one of the trainees. Am I immature for wanting to laugh at the colorful verbal abuse early on?

More disturbing is the fact that I sometimes thought Foley was being too soft, especially when Zack Mayo was insubordinate. When Mayo tearfully demanded that Foley not kick him out because he had nowhere else to go, I envisioned the sergeant saying, "You shoulda thought of that before you broke the rules."

Entertainment seems to bring out the worst in me.
