John Waters Kids Movie Scrapped

He blames the economy, which makes executive decisions more fickle than usual. I blame his history as a semi-pornographer, lethally combined with the title of Fruitcake and his own description of it as "Little Rascals on acid." Maybe the movie would be good, but it's really not that surprising a rejection, dude.

Knowing that about him, it makes me glad I never saw Hairspray. I wouldn't feel right supporting someone with that kind of reputation.

Every celebrity seems to want to do a kids' movie or book, despite the fact that almost none of them know what kids like. I find this very odd since the celebrities were presumably kids themselves at one point in their lives.

It would make sense for someone who had been born to celebrities not to have a good idea of what most kids like. Madonna for one lacks that excuse, but I can see why she'd either forget with time or prefer not to revisit her childhood as it really was. (I'm not saying it was bad, only that it wasn't as pleasant as her later years.)

There was a time that I thought books for young children would be extremely easy to write. Well, it's true that they're generally not as long and don't call for as much education as grown-up books, but the craft isn't all in the illustrations. I wrote many stories in early elementary school that would need severe reworking to become publishable.

Writing for kids is not much less complicated than writing for adults. They are very picky about what they read, and they get mad if you cheat them. And you have to avoid certain things that are fairly common in adult books, page-long descriptions of sunrises for example (most kids will find that too boring and find something more exciting to read after that).
