Yesterday I watched The Crying Game. It's a movie I'd been putting off because I was afraid it would be too tragic or otherwise too disturbing. Well, it's neither for me. I don't regret watching.

The real tragedy about TCG is how people seem to remember it almost exclusively for the twist revelation scene, now rather thoroughly spoiled (and exaggerated in spoofs). I have to wonder whether I'd've seen it coming without prompting.

I suspect that many who make reference to TCG, like my past self, never saw it. I'd known nothing about the involvement of the IRA, which accounts for about half the movie. I didn't even know it was set in the British Isles. Nor had I learned the significance of the scorpion silhouette on the disc -- or the title, for that matter. (There's a fair amount of crying, but the characters don't make a game of it.) Both of those factors obliquely connect with the notion of a lack of free will, which pervades plenty of love stories. Indeed, the twist is almost just an add-on.

It's kind of a shame that Jaye Davidson moved on to the fashion industry after so few roles.

Interesting review. I've never seen it, but may have to after reading that.
