Saw The Reader today, which makes this only the second year I've ever seen all five Academy Best Picture nominees before the ceremony. (The first time was 2005.)
Dad thinks it may be the best of the five. I'm not so inclined, partly because romance films aren't my genre. But it is an unusual romance, one that's far more interesting than it is beautiful. On an emotional level, it is complex. Several times I couldn't readily understand why someone did something, especially Hanna.
Dad and I agree that the nominees this year are hard to rank with respect to one another -- but that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, while hardly bad, is the least among them. The Reader is similarly slow, but at least it has a good reason to be slow.
