Whew. On Tuesday, I received a 3-hour-and-23-minute audioconference transcript. People involved had dropped the ball, so it was already late and the client was getting impatient. At first I took my usual leisurely pace, but then there came pressure to have it done by Friday morning. Most of yesterday was unavailable, because a 65-page proposal took priority. I stayed more than an hour later than usual, turning down my parents' dinner invitation. Even then, I was less than half done.

If you've seen my older posts about editing transcripts rather than transcribing on my own, you know how crappy the rough transcripts are. About half the mistakes appear to be by a human and half by a machine, or else a really inattentive human with poor English skills -- "The cube bearing much" for "Thank you very much"? The latest text noted two times when a new transcriber took over; they were about equally bad. The last one clearly tried to process what was being said, but must have typed sentences or entire paragraphs from memory. It only got worse when a speaker had English as a second language.

Anyway, for good measure, I set my alarm 25 minutes earlier and came in at a good time this morning. I still expected to stay late and/or get up early the next day.

Instead, I finished a little after 5, to the astonishment and gratitude of all involved. I think it's a personal record.

Still, if "Downscale" doesn't update tomorrow, it probably means I was exhausted.

Ugh, my condolences on the English-as-second-language work. I was on tech support with a guy from India or Mexico who spoke uncertainly with a very thick accent and stuttered a lot. I wish he'd read my profile which said that I'd prefer to resolve the problem through email.
