In today's Comcast headlines: "Obama Pardons Turkey."

Normally I expect the news to cover something halfway surprising, not an annual ritual that goes as usual. But I guess they figured that if they didn't cover it, we would assume it didn't happen. And then we'd be antsy to know what the president had been doing this quiet day.

I think I've said on LJ before that the whole idea of pardoning a turkey is absurd. What's the turkey's federal crime -- being delicious? Theoretically, the bird isn't even intelligent enough to be accused of sin. And what's the point of pardoning that one turkey while preparing to eat another? Did one earn the pardon by being relatively photogenic? (I seem to recall a "West Wing" episode about that.)

In the unlikely event that I become president, I promise you readers that I will not pardon a turkey. Then again, I'm not likely to eat one either.
