As of today, I've read three lists of the best movies of the 2000s. Anyone else think they should wait until 2010, especially seeing as studios often save the Oscar bait for last?

All three lists, unsurprisingly, carry a number of films that didn't excite me and some that I hadn't heard of (mostly foreign). I was most surprised to see The Royal Tenenbaums near the top of two lists, since I thought it had a middling reception. Guess I'll check it out.

Hard for me to say how the decade stacks against previous ones as far as movies. It produced some discouraging trends, but still plenty of worthy viewings. Neither a dark renaissance like the '70s nor a time for fun at the cost of serious fare like the '80s. And I still haven't figured out how to characterize the '90s.

I'm not going to assemble my own top-X list of movies from the decade. First, it's a broad category, and I feel funny comparing highly dissimilar movies. Second, I can recall maybe 130 movies from the decade, so it would have to be a pretty small X to mean much. Third, for all my professed love of movies, only so many really wowed me.

...Which should not reflect badly on the decade. In truth, sometimes I feel like I've been bored for many years and only kidding myself about moments of entertainment. Sheesh, what am I, 15?
