When I moved from my library desk, I was told that my present office would be a temporary arrangement and that what had been a mostly vacant copier room would be transformed into a multiperson workspace. But as the weeks passed and I still saw no signs of progress on the area, I wondered if my office could be more permanent. Maybe my seniority over whoever came next would let me not move again.

I was wrong. My seniority let me pick the desk space, but someone else will take my place where I am now. There are some advantages of convenience in the former copy room -- shorter walks to the main door, the emergency door, and my prime correspondents, for example. I could use the potential social atmosphere. Nevertheless, I can't shake the fact that I'm moving from an office with a door and an officemate who shows up for about 12 hours a week...to a semi-cubicle.

The wall had better have space for my calendar.
