Some years stand out to me as particularly good (e.g., 2004) or bad (e.g., 2000) for cinema in general. And sometimes when a year is over, I try to think which movie was my favorite.

Imagine my surprise to realize only yesterday that I can't think of a likely favorite for 2003. Certainly the year presented widely popular films, but none of them really excite me. The Return of the King? Clunky. Lost in Translation? Sleepy. Mystic River? Not enough reward for sitting thru all that drear. Master and Commander? Hard to believe that was TRotK's main Oscar competition. Seabiscuit? Okay, but horses and Tobey Maguire aren't my thing. Finding Nemo? My least favorite of the seven Pixar features I've seen. The Curse of the Black Pearl? Too cheesy.

Sorry to sound like a curmudgeon, but this is bothering me. Am I overlooking a likely choice? I have not seen Big Fish, Kill Bill: Vol. 1, or any of the O movies (Oldboy, Old School, Ong-bak). I suppose I should see at least one just for the sake of fishing for a 2003 fave.
