My folks filled the cat-shaped hole in their life today -- with two, an 18-month-old mom and a 2-month-old daughter. We went to visit their Virginia home, not knowing beforehand whether we would take them. Sadly, the younger children in the family were reluctant to part with either cat, but another member has an allergy. We promised to send photos of the cats' growth progress, and the family may visit someday.

The family called the mom "Coco" (or "Coaco" depending whom you asked) and the daughter "Shadow." We decided to keep the mom's name (with the more conventional spelling) because she'd gotten used to it; besides, it's kind of cute. But since they're both diluted tabbies, basically tan, light gray, and white, neither is dark enough to merit "Shadow." After some discussion in the car, we've decided to try out the similarly repeating "Mimi," which we're saying is short for "Meerkat," because it sounds like she says "meer."

Not that either of them made any sound since the car ride in the hours that I was over at my folks' house. The cats did an exhaustive search of the accessible parts of the house, tho we'd closed the doors upstairs to make things less overwhelming. Eventually they relaxed enough that Coco could nurse Mimi, tho we get the impression she won't much longer. This is a much better start than Molly had; she kept hiding for a long time. These two don't even resist getting held or petted.

Coco is about half the weight of Molly, looking rather thin for a new mom even when she lies down. Mimi feels like a furry feather. Neither has had much experience with vets yet, but there are no red flags for their health. In terms of behavior, we have only two major concerns so far: They scratch the couches despite the presence of a scratching post (Mimi does so to climb), and Coco is used to going outside. Good thing Mom's retired and can accompany them all day.

Sure hope it works out nicely.
