We all were taught that moths are dull in hue and fly by night,
In contrast to the butterflies. That isn’t always right.
To know for sure, we’d best examine many other things.
For instance, when at rest, the moths aren’t apt to shut their wings.
They’re fuzzier, especially with feathery antennae
Instead of long thin club shapes. Some adult moths haven’t any
Proboscis, never eating, simply living off the fat
Collected in the larval stage, with broader bods at that.
A moth will make a silk cocoon within or on the ground.
With butterflies, chrysalides on branches can be found.
The moths have ears; the butterflies use wings to feel vibrations.
The frenulum in moths ensures the wings’ cooperation.
I’m sad to say that none of these is absolutely true
In every case. Taxonomists are not sure what to do.
