The deerstalker cap is a Sherlock Holmes signature,
More so than even his pipe,
And thus it now signals facetious detectives
In works of a comical type.

While Doyle was never explicit about it,
He sometimes would mention a cap
That fit its description, with close-fitting cloth
Meant for travel with ears under flaps.

In England back then, there were multiple options,
But deerstalkers saw the most use.
They turned up in drawings that old Sidney Paget
And Frederic Dorr Steele would produce.

Unfortunately, many modern depictions
Show Holmes with the cap in the city.
It sure wasn’t cricket away from the country,
And Holmes would’ve cared. What a pity.
