When School Was Cool
I learned the etymology of “school” and was surprised.
It came to us from ancient Greek, and that much I’d surmised,
But who’d have thought it used to be synonymous with “leisure”?
In classical antiquity, such knowledge was a treasure,
So young adults and children gathered round to hear a sage.
Of course, there wasn’t much to do for fun within that age.
Regardless, it’s a feature of the past I sometimes covet.
If school were free and voluntary, yeah, I bet we’d love it.
