As some of you noted (thanks again), I turned 28 yesterday. Whenever I add a year to my age, I think of some reference to the number -- usually as an age, but this time I thought of other associations instead:

1. Costello argues to Abbott that 7 x 13 = 28. (He treats the tens column as a second ones column.)

2. Harry in Born Yesterday bitterly gives Billie a low gin score without showing the cards to prove it: "Twenty-eight." "Twenty-eight?" "TWENTY-EIGHT!"

3. On a much less classic note, in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000), Fearless Leader asks Boris and Natasha how many times they've tried and failed to defeat the heroes. Boris says, "I don't know, mmm... 28?" This has stuck with me because the number sounds high for real life but low for a TV series.

It's the first time I've been aware of my birthday falling on Pentecost Sunday. Imagine my surprise when the priest said "Happy birthday" -- to the congregation. (The holiday commemorates the Church effectively starting with the gift of the Spirit, whereas the Jewish Pentecost commemorates the gift of the Law.)

My parents were very generous this year. They gave me Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands, released last Tuesday; and Super Mario Galaxy 2, released on the day itself. They're rarely among the first buyers of things. From Molly the cat, I got Issac Asimov's I, Robot and The Robots of Dawn -- secondhand copies, because Molly's on a tight budget, according to my parents.

I also got my first cake that's supposed to look like something other than a cake. Inspired by the Sunday Sweets of Cake Wrecks, I told Mom that she could bake my usual kind or delegate something more creative to a professional. We had the same first thought for the theme: the Zelda series. She found a local pro who had never heard of Link and was only vaguely aware of the series, but she did a good job with a Wind Waker-style 3D Link and especially the Master Sword. Written on it was "Happy birthday, Zteve," with the Z styled like in the Zelda logo. I expect to show photos later. The downsides: Not everyone liked the fondant, and it's going to take a while to finish the leftovers taking up much of my fridge.
