Without meaning to, in two days I watched two programs in which a major character seems like an exaggeration of me.

First was my dad's rental of Lars and the Real Girl. Like Lars, I'm gentle and religious but highly introverted, and I feel funny about being touched. But I wouldn't break a promise to dine with family just so I could be alone, and hugs don't make me wince in pain, especially when I expect them. Still, there was enough similarity to make me worry that I could've ended up like him, and D.C. wouldn't be nearly as supportive of him as a small town.

Next was my rental of the first disc of "The Big Bang Theory." While I have trouble remembering what a Higgs boson is, the geek who resembles me most is Sheldon. He has trouble reading sarcasm and emotions, he's a neat freak, and he has no drive to find romance. I like to think, tho, that any given person would find me less annoying.

Both were well worth my viewing, but I can't help feeling on some level like somebody's making fun of me.

"A Beautiful Mind" messed with my head pretty badly, because if I ever went totally schizophrenic, I'd probably end up just like the lead character. Insanity and mental degeneration are two things I hope I never have to go through, I believe I can handle almost anything else.

Was it really degeneration? He seemed to retain his genius side. And he did learn to compensate for his hallucinations.

Of course, it's worth noting that the real John Nash had only audio hallucinations. And he wouldn't have been invited to give a speech late in life, because he was paranoid, anti-Semitic, and prone to perverse acts like indecent exposure. I hope you're only paranoid at worst.
