I was greatly relieved to find the power back when I returned last night. Still couldn't use the Net from home due to a Comcast outage, but I had other plans to spend the hours anyway. How fortunate that I'd preloaded today's "Downscale".

Judging from the flashing clock, the power had been out for about 23 hours. I was right not to go straight home after work, eating at a restaurant instead.

(As it happens, this restaurant has a waitress who's gotten pretty friendly with me, even when someone else takes my order. Only when I saw her yesterday did I remember her saying she works Thursday nights. Ostensibly, she's singled me out because of the frequency with which I show up. I suspect it's a technique for encouraging future business, partly because she looks attractive.)

This morning, I learned from a housemate that Pepco was slow to respond to the needs of the nursing home where she works. You'd think it a high priority given the respirators and whatnot, but maybe personnel figured the geezers were gonna die soon anyway.

Minutes ago, I learned that my folks' house won't be getting power back until midday Sunday. And here I'd considered visiting their place if mine was still dark and cold.

From what I know, Pepco is the only provider of electricity for the District. If it had competition, we wouldn't have to put up with this response time.
