Whew! I finally found a solution to the lack of audio, and I didn't have to spend any more money. After plugging in the new headset, I went to Control Panel -> Sound and set it as the default output device. Nobody told me directly to try this; I just deduced as much from other, oddly less helpful hints. It's not ideal, but definitely workable. And hey, maybe the discomfort of my ears will counteract the urge to play too long at a time.
Now the only new issue remaining with my computer is resizing images. Since the video card switch, everything has looked larger. I can shrink website visuals and desktop icons easily, but what about everything else?
