I now know of FileZilla alternatives that I can buy from Apple and thereby ensure safe use on my MacBook. They don't cost much, but it still feels like a movie theater requiring you to buy their refreshments instead of bringing your own. More importantly, I still need to download a driver to go with my scanner. I'd buy a new scanner if I thought it would solve the problem, but I have no such assurance.

So far, while I do see a few advantages to a laptop even if I don't take it anywhere, I have yet to see any advantages over Microsoft. It's not just a learning curve: I miss being able to delete letters forward or one word at a time and reach the end of a line with one keystroke. Apple converts tell me I'll learn to love it in time. I figure on giving it two more weeks, and if I still appreciate it only for quick Net connections, I'll make use of that warranty.

In the meantime, I will sigh and remember that my problems pale next to those of almost everyone else I know.

Thanks, but that turns out unnecessary: I've overcome the download problem. Now I just need to remember what to input the first time I use FileZilla on this machine. Maybe the Comic Genesis help desk still has the thread where I learned the right port....

That's Apple in a nutshell. Convincing people to learn to live with less, while charging them more for the privilege.

Oddly enough, today was the first time I used FileZilla successfully from my Mac. I did my ArcSoft PhotoStudio work on my old PC because the free trial version can't do enough, but when it was taking too long to get online, I transferred the PNG by USB and voila. I may buy PhotoStudio 6 for this machine, but I'm going to look around first.

Sandy, the housemate who gave me the Mac idea, asked yesterday if I love it. I said, "Getting there."
