I was going to have my next post be a light-hearted one, but my desire to pass on underreported and appalling stories superseded it.

In brief, back in December 2002, U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan chained lanky 22-year-old cab driver Dilawar of Yakubi to a ceiling, effectively crucifying him for 3 days. He had had no trial, and investigations report that he and his passengers were innocent. Soldiers laughingly "pulpified" his dangled legs, returning often for a total of about 100 blows. When they took him down for interrogation, his dislocated arms flapped and he could neither sit nor stand. During his last day, he cried for Allah many times. General Daniel K. McNeill later denied this incident and any like it. Dilawar of Yakubi is survived by a 3-year-old daughter.

In several ways, his death was worse than that reported for Jesus.

Nothing like this to return me to heartfelt prayer.
