“A democratic country gets the leader it deserves.”
This sentiment is common, but it’s getting on my nerves.
Deserving is for human individuals, not nations,
Espec’ly when exhibiting such voter variations.
The people who have voted for a candidate who lost
Should not be held responsible for what the winner’s cost,
And do not give them credit for the benefits in store,
Provided there will be some (I’m not certain anymore).

There is a known connection from democracy to trouble
Quick tyrannies arise when voted cash dependencies can double
And double they too often do when limits are mere laws
The Framers knew this, and the Constitution fixed these flaws

Or almost fixed them; words and phrases grew "interpretations"
And Democrats fought hard to keep up slavery's predations
While even Democrats up north fought plans to disallow it
It took a war with millions dead or harmed to disavow it

Our Constitution checks "democracies" who'd wrest control
Some things need new consent, not just a "half plus one vote" poll
And most is done by representatives, in theory skilled
At making laws, so "rules by rubes" are pointed out and killed

May I pass this on to a forum thread full of poetry?

I've been quite ill since late July, hence my LJ's delay
It's not done yet: I'm still within a hospital today
But your fine Alexandrine verse deserved a like reply
And though I knew it would be slow, I thought that I would try

There are some meter errors, but the edits would be tough
I'm hoping that it can be seen for now as "good enough"
I've not been writing much in rhyme and I'm not in my groove
They've just put me on Lyrica; perhaps this will improve

Thanks, but from what I read, it's not Alexandrine if it doesn't have 12 syllables per line.
