Until the tale of Andersen, the mermaid lore was grim.
A tryst of man and mermaid never ended well for him.
The man could face seduction and get dragged below to die.
It isn’t always clear the mermaid really meant to try;
Perhaps she just forgot that men can’t breathe beneath the sea.
Regardless, she might eat him, which is bad enough to me.
At best, they’d live in love for years, but then she’d up and leave.
So charming was her character, the man would die from grief.
I’ve found in Spanish lexicons, there is no separate name
For mermaids from the sirens; they are practically the same.
