The Express includes a generally interesting section called The Blog Log (not so clever if you know the origin of "blog"), which takes sentences out of various blogs, including LJs, that seem worth quoting on current events. Today, a local Blogspot writer carped about DC's drivers. Our awful traffic is no secret, and the problem's not set to go away anytime soon, barring an exceptional disaster or the Second Coming (which isn't all about disaster). Partly there's the widespread construction, but only a bad local driving culture can account for the rest. As the Blogspotter put it, "[T]he majority of you out there behind the wheel...believe you're meant to be first in everything."

The odd coincidence: Minutes before reading this, I had realized that Metro riders were just as bad. Our new subway car audio systems use musical tones and an automated voice to tell people when to step away from the closing doors. This morning was the first time in a while I can recall the conductor coming on the mike to paraphrase the "step away" message. Her polite if plaintive words did nothing to dissuade several people lined up at a door near the front car. They wouldn't even disperse to other doors.

People, take a moment to imagine working as a subway conductor, just for a day. DC jobs don't get much more monotonous, do they? With that in mind, let's show an iota of respect, if not for our fellow riders, then for these public service workers. Okay?
