Getting there

Chirpasee, thank you for the Photoshop CD. I spent a good long time playing with it. Too bad I didn't realize until afterward that the tryout version wouldn't let me save.

Turns out that a program already on my computer, ArcSoft Photostudio 5.5, seems to do about as good a job with a friendlier interface. Here's what I did this evening:

If you think it looks too sloppy, I suppose I can put my ruler to more use. I won't do much more with the coloring, tho, because it takes too long.

Other tentative plans for my comic:

1. The title will be "Downscale," which fits on multiple levels.

2. It will be hosted by Comic Genesis, assuming they don't reject it. They list a number of free luxuries in exchange for ad placement, and they have a good mix of comics I admire and comics closer to my current skill level. Webcomics Nation might be good, but I don't read any of its comics, so it'd feel weird. I tried to compare The Nice, but their Web site gave me no clue how to sign up! Even if I find out how, the oversight of an obvious link makes me think they don't have their act together enough for me.

3. It will update twice a week. In keeping with many other twice-a-week webcomics, those days will be Tuesday and Thursday.

Thoughts?

Dude, it totally lets you save. Choose "save as" and then specify .jpg or whatever. It may not allow you save in the PS format, but you won't be displaying your comics in that format.

The only crucial thing that's frozen out on the version is the ability to specify the number of pixels you'd like an image to be. They made it so you have to guesstimate that.

The "Save As" function was grayed out when I tried before.

Paint Shop Pro is my weapon of choice in the online comics world.

A smaller maker's mark rather than your full signature would serve you well.

You have a great eye for perspective. Lines could be cleaner. Ruler's good for that.

Increase the tolerance on your flood-fill, that will help to eliminate the white lines between the flood and the line like are in the snakes purple stripes.

The NICE is not web-comic hosting. It's a juried list of extant web comics.

I'll see about that "tolerance" feature, and I do believe I'll redo this with more ruler action and my initials.

Hmm, my weapon of choice is GIMP, it's interface takes getting used to. It's "tolerance" method is a little weird but I find it more effective. The weirdest part is how you always do each step individually (e.g. select by color and region then fill selection.) There is a patch out there with a set of scripts that near perfectly imitate Photoshop's functions.

Did you consider Keenspace? While they tend to chose more annoying ads than some sites, and also better known for their more exclusive KeenSpot site.

The most important part is that the site can handle fairly big loads with no problem, and doesn't become a victim of overload when someone hosted becomes a site of the day on major portal or forum.

Comic Genesis is Keenspace, renamed.
