Looks like I'm in for torture this summer and fall.

The kittens from upstairs are now old enough to be allowed in the backyard. I've welcomed their presence, of course. I mentioned before that June was the more talkative when they were less than two months old. Lately, neither has been meowing, but June remains the more social, rubbing against me with a loud, continuous purr. Wide-eyed July is slower to warm up to me, drawing back a little when I pet her, but she doesn't mind licking my hand or occasionally playing with my shoelaces (which June does more). Both like to play with stones and whatever else is loose nearby. They pounce each other regardless of who has the higher ground on the stairs.

So where does the torture come in? Keeping them in the backyard. They're still tiny, so I have to be careful not to let them slip out the gate with me. More challenging is when June clearly wants to follow me into the basement suite. Simply picking her up and putting her aside won't do. The last time she was around, I had to wait about a minute before she got out of the doorway and I made the door close as fast as I could. She then pressed her face and paws against the glass -- did she even know there would be glass? It melts my heart so.

It'll be easier when the kittens get bigger, I suppose.
