I've now signed a lease and delivered a security deposit. But it's not for the place I described earlier. It's a "basement" studio at ground level in the same neighborhood. The house is home to a landlady and two separate other renters; the only common space is the laundry room.

First, the downsides: It costs $25 a month more than I pay now. No pets are allowed and no pets are already there. Most importantly, it's several more blocks from the places I frequently go.

But aside from that, it's pretty much superior to where I live now. More furniture space. More kitchen space. More bathroom space. More fridge space and especially more freezer space. More windows. Better lighting. Better control of heating and air conditioning. Wall-to-wall carpeting. No kids in the building. A less troublesome gate. And the distance does mean more exercise and more options for scenic variation in this lovely neighborhood.

The big price difference from the other studio I'd wanted kept me from saying yes to this one right away, but it occurred to me that the landlady of that studio had not responded to my email from several days ago, which led me to suspect (as I am now certain) that she chose someone else. Besides, the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much more comfortable I'll be and how important that was. The cheaper place had no built-in lights in the main room and only the door's glass for a window. Even for me, that little lighting is hard to put up with.

EDIT: I just checked a map and found that I exaggerated the distance. Thanks to a diagonal avenue, my commute to work isn't likely to take more than another minute or two.

Wow, congrats on the new neighbourhood!
Sounds like it'll be a little nicer to live in (I know just how annoying cramped or nearly-cramped spaces can be).

Any idea how the landlord is going to be?

The landlady has given me no reason to believe she'll be anything but kind and responsive.

BTW, it's not really a new neighborhood for me.
