Late this morning, I was told that I would be moved to another office, preferably by COB today. The possibility had been hinted previously but not confirmed until today. The company is expanding, so now I have to share an office with a new hire -- let's call her "Kim."

The first question I asked was whether Kim's work would be hindered by me playing audio files to check against transcripts. Kim said we'd give it a try, and if that doesn't work, I'll see about headphones. Alas, most headphones take only a few minutes to irritate me; I'd hate to have to use them all day.

Of course, I'm also concerned about the limitations on the nonwork I can do during work hours. Our desks are arranged such that we can't see each other's screens, but unless I settle for headphones or wait until Kim's not around, I'll have to save many online videos for the evening.

Ah well. That was the situation when I shared an office with a part-timer and when, in my first few months on the job, I worked in the library. (That library is being converted into more proper office space as I speak.) Heck, I had less screen privacy then. I suppose I should be glad about my limitations. In theory, it'll mean less time wasted on my part. Whether that holds in practice remains to be seen.

The new office is further from the ground floor, the nearest nonemergency exit, the mail room, and the free newspapers. On the plus side, more exercise. Besides, it's closer to more of the people I'll work with. And to a better kitchen, a bigger storage room, and the used-book shelves.

The overhead light is brighter than I like, and the Venetian blinds don't rotate open. Eh, I'll get used to it. Besides, it's my first office with a window at this company.

My new desk doesn't have as much surface space. Still, there's enough space for everything I really want out in the open. Some of the former clutter has finally been discarded, and the rest fits easily in the drawers. There's more leg room as well.

I don't get half as much wall space to myself as before. That's just fine, because I didn't know what to do with it all before. My current decorations will be more than adequate.

I was pretty grumpy this morning (tho careful not to show it) when I heard the news. Now that everything's set up, it doesn't look so bad.

Eeep, they give you a window and the Venetian blinds don't open? Unless there's a brick wall or something behind it, I can't believe they'd do that.

I can raise them (or at least Kim can, since they're on her side of the room). It's just that the bar you turn to flip them is wonky.
