Three months after Millie's death, my parents have bought a new cat -- one who happens to have a similar and equally cute name: Molly. The name also matches that of my late grandmother, who hated cats. But this cat, estimated to be five years old, was born a little too early to be my grandmother's reincarnation like my mom speculated.

Molly has a fairly high voice and short gray and white fur with a softness such that she now has the nickname "Bunny Kitty" from my sister. She also weighs at least as much as Millie did at her heaviest, so she'll be getting diet food.

Molly was raised by an elderly couple until a new member of the household came with allergies. She spent the last one to two months in a shelter, which was all the harder for her since she's declawed -- something my family would never have arranged. Yes, the couches will be safe now, but we'll have to be extra careful not to let Molly out.

I went to my folks' house today in time to meet Molly as she arrived. In order not to overwhelm her after the stay in the cage, we took her to the basement and closed most of the doors there. We weren't even sure when she'd come out of the carrier, but it turns out she did that right away. She also ventured upstairs and got used to the place sooner than I expected. My other fear was that Molly's past of not getting along with the man in her previous family had taught her sexism, but she seems just as comfortable with me and my dad as with my mom and sister. And that is pretty comfortable.

No two cats I've known behave alike. I have yet to gauge Molly's character well, but there is one distinctive thing she's done several times already: sudden flops. One second, she'll be walking around sniffing and looking intense; the next, her flabbiness will be spread out on the floor, looking content except for a possible minor tail twitch. At her speed, it's somewhat comical. If one of us crowds her, she will get up and move exactly three paces before flopping again.

I'm going to see about getting photos of Molly to post here.
