It's no secret that IMDb ratings are skewed in favor of recent movies, especially on its top 250. Actually, it's skewed to both extremes, judging from the bottom 100. Of course, it's more pardonable to forget old movies when they're bad.

With that in mind, I'm a bit surprised to find that The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull currently has a lower rating (7.1) than The Temple of Doom (7.4). I for one found the former to be considerably more fun. Never worse than okay, in fact. Karen Allen is no Kate Capshaw, and Shia LaBeouf is no Ke Huy Quan. It's never quite as gross as the grossest parts of TToD. There's just as much substance, not that that means much.

My theory: It's the climax, stupid. TToD's greatest moment is the famous mine cart ride near the end. By contrast, the entertainment of TKotCS wears thinnest in the last several minutes, despite all the spectacle.

It's long been my own opinion that no part of anything is more important than the ending. I just never realized how true it could be.

I could be wrong, of course. Seeing TKotCS in a theater and TToD on video might have made a big difference. Or maybe my taste just differs a little from the majority.
