Learning the word "slacktivist" yesterday reminded me: It's been a while since I posted the charity sites I visit. Please click buttons at each of these links each day. They will cost you nothing but contribute to worthy causes.

EcologyFund.com
The Hunger Site (continue to each tab, possibly clicking buttons more than once)
Care2 (continue to each tab, at least for the causes you want to support)
FreeRice (have fun)

You'll notice that the Hunger Site features quotes from famous people, some of whom aren't easy to research for more than quotes (e.g., Stacia Tauscher). Today they have one from Buzz Aldrin: "If we can conquer space, we can conquer child hunger." Let's put aside for the moment the fact that the two challenges require rather different solutions. I hope he's not suggesting that we've already conquered space. That's like saying that a newly walking baby has conquered the earth. Or is he hoping that we'll eventually travel to a foreign planet with an abundance of food and distribute it to all the starving children?

It also ignores the reality that much child hunger is imposed by Third World governments.

True, and if we try feeding the starving, their governments will often seize the food, use it to feed their military, and spend the money they saved on food to buy more guns to kill their citizens with. Child hunger is not a problem with a trivial solution.

Superman learned that the hard way.
