On Saturday, I saw Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? via Netflix. The next day, passing by Potomac Video, I decided to get something from the classics section. My eye fell on Francis of Assisi. The facts that I seemed to remember a middling IMDb score for it and recognized none of the main actors' names suggested that it was a stretch for the section, but between my love for Francis and the direction of Michael Curtiz, I went for it.

Turns out I did recognize one actor by both face and name: Cecil Kellaway. He played a cardinal in FoA and a monsignor six years later in GWCtD. Funny, he seemed too good to be demoted.

Further research indicates that I had seen Kellaway in a few other movies without knowing it. He was also in Gunga Din -- which would have been my next choice after FoA.

I'd call it quite a coincidence, but I'm believing in those less and less.

As well you should. Synchronicity has always been there, and the more we look for it, the more we see it.

If the source you just quoted was anonymous... O_O

Was the movie good? St. Francis has always been one of my favorite saints.

Your mileage may vary. As a strict moviegoer, I didn't find much to make it stand out apart from the strong use of Technicolor and costumes. As a St. Francis fan, I appreciated the portrayal but found it rather sparse -- not surprising, since the bio I've read would make too long a movie. The main theme that recurs is people, especially a former military friend, having trouble with his insistence on poverty.

I give it a slightly more generous rating than the 6.4 average on IMDb. Hardly bad, but hardly great either.

The Number 23

I think it's more along the lines of The Number 23 or those scenes from LOST people keep talking about. People create patterns in their mind about anything. If you squint hard enough at a waffle or a dirty window, it looks like Elvis or Jesus or the Virgin Mary or the Arabic symbol for Allah or possibly Mickey Mouse.
