I'd learned before that Arsenic and Old Lace, one of my all-time favorite comedies, was Cary Grant's least favorite movie because he was directed to overact. The other night, I watched Gunga Din, made five years earlier. Good stuff, but it's not even a full-fledged comedy and his acting is every bit as over-the-top. I even half-wanted his character to get shot for being so feisty.

According to the DVD documentary, Grant had been offered another of the three leading roles but turned it down for being too flat. It's not even all that flat.

Something happen in those five years, Mr. Grant?

Well, I would hardly call "Father Goose" over the top - it was one of his later efforts, and remains one of my all-time favorites.

Interesting to watch peoples' attitudes change over the years.
