Taro is a root used in Chinese cakes. "Aso" is an expression of politeness.

Is it just me, or does the new Japanese prime minister's name sound like a politically incorrect joke?

When I hear taro I think of the south pacific root so popular in polynesian cultures. But that's a funny joke just the same...

Research tells me that that's actually what's in taro cakes. I've amended my entry accordingly. Thank you for bringing that up.

You probably don't remeber Japanese Prime Minister Takeshita (ta-KAY-shi-ta), the despair of news anchors across America. The only person who got it worse was when they kept spoonerizing Forrest Tucker. ;)
