The house is noisy right now, because one of my housemates is having a wedding party. I have a different reason to celebrate: My new cat arrived! I'm calling him Kieran, for several reasons in descending order of importance:
1. I like the look and sound of it.
2. It means "black," which describes most of his fur.
3. It's a human name.
4. It's not too common, but neither will it leave people incredulous.
5. It doesn't start with an M. I want some variety after Millie and Molly.
6. It's the name of an amusing character from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.
7. His previous owner likes the new name, and so do my parents.
To my surprise, Kieran did not seem nervous in his new environs. After a few minutes of exploration, he acted right at home. Less surprising, given what I'd heard, was how sociable he's been from the get-go with both me and, later, my visiting parents.
In some ways, he's like Molly. He's mostly quiet -- didn't even meow until I opened a can for him after hours. He sometimes lies down so suddenly that it's comical. But despite having been overfed lately in a vet's opinion, he's nowhere near Molly's size, so it's not quite as comical. This may have to do with him lacking Maine coon blood and being adolescent rather than in early middle age.
Kieran was rather sedate for most of the day. Hopefully, that means he'll adjust well to my usual daytime absence. I got a little worried when he stared at the toys I presented without attacking them. Now that it's night, he's showing his reputed athleticism. Already he's killed and eaten at least two of the big crickets that have been moving in with autumn, and the long cardboard box that was used to store a cat perch (which I may or may not install) has provided more entertainment than I expected.
The transferring owner gave me two pieces of medicine -- pills for digestion and ointment for watery eyes -- that Kieran has needed lately, and she showed me how to administer them. It takes more aggression than I'm used to using on cats, but Kieran was remarkably well-behaved. Hope it works for me. I'm taking him to a different animal hospital for a general checkup on Monday. Fortunately, he's also apparently complacent about carriers.
