I like to imitate voices, and some people have told me I do it well. If only my social skills made it likely that I could find employment in voice acting. Someday I suppose I'll buy the hardware to put some recordings online. About the best I can hope to do is assistance in a Web animation. Oh well, it's still fun in private.

Anyway, I made a disturbing discovery recently. I hadn't imitated Donald Duck since before puberty, so I gave it a try. Wasn't surprised to have trouble with it, but I didn't expect to sound remarkably like Andy Serkis's Gollum. Now the two of them are terribly intertwined in my mind. Come to think of it, Mickey Mouse was holding the One Ring at the 2003 Academy Awards....

Thanks for the rerun of sorts. Remember, I linked to that video in this journal myself.

Voice imitations are fun. Doing (sort of) proper voice acting sounds like fun too, a friend of mine has talked about how he should get some of us to do something that way.

"Come to think of it, Mickey Mouse was holding the One Ring at the 2003 Academy Awards...."

That's just scary.

You might want to know a little more about the context. Mickey was searching for the award envelope and found three other things in his possession first, the third being the Ring. He kind of jumped when he saw it, then hid it behind his back and intoned, "Very funny, Frodo." The live audience loved it, but I had to wonder how he failed to sense it calling to him. Does he have Tom Bombadil-like immunity?

It's surprisingly cheap and easy to do voice recordings. You can download a free program like Wavepad or Scanrec, then get your ordinary crappy microphone, and you can do all sorts of recordings. My problem is that I don't have any voice talent, so when my microphone broke, I didn't bother to buy another.
