Saw Frost/Nixon on Saturday. To my slight surprise, it is now my second favorite movie nominated for Academy Best Picture this year, after Slumdog Millionaire. It sounds like my parents feel the same way. Who knew that the interviews, as well as the time in between and some of the time before and after, could be so riveting?
To those conservatives who think they don't want to watch, let me assure you that Nixon is portrayed in a pretty sympathetic light. I even admired and almost rooted for him early on. But Frost had more at stake, so even if I had always liked Nixon, I would ultimately be glad for Frost's victory. (And despite what IMDb claims, I don't consider that a spoiler.)
Of course, I'm too young to appreciate it in full. I had to take my folks' word for it that Michael Sheen sounded exactly like the real Sir David Frost, and even that Frank Langella sounded just like the real Richard Nixon. He wasn't a dead ringer in appearance. But maybe I'm too accustomed to caricatures.
