Saw Frost/Nixon on Saturday. To my slight surprise, it is now my second favorite movie nominated for Academy Best Picture this year, after Slumdog Millionaire. It sounds like my parents feel the same way. Who knew that the interviews, as well as the time in between and some of the time before and after, could be so riveting?

To those conservatives who think they don't want to watch, let me assure you that Nixon is portrayed in a pretty sympathetic light. I even admired and almost rooted for him early on. But Frost had more at stake, so even if I had always liked Nixon, I would ultimately be glad for Frost's victory. (And despite what IMDb claims, I don't consider that a spoiler.)

Of course, I'm too young to appreciate it in full. I had to take my folks' word for it that Michael Sheen sounded exactly like the real Sir David Frost, and even that Frank Langella sounded just like the real Richard Nixon. He wasn't a dead ringer in appearance. But maybe I'm too accustomed to caricatures.

Was Frost/Nixon a true story or fiction? I heard it was fiction, and I get very queasy when Hollywood starts writing fictional stories about real people in order to bash them.

It's based on a true story. Only the conversational details were fictionalized, understandably.

I later watched a "Daily Show" interview with Sir David Frost from November 17, 2008. His comments go well with the movie.

Just to be safe, I checked the relevant IMDb trivia and goofs pages. They got a few details wrong, like Frost's birthday (actually two weeks later than they said), but nothing terribly important.
