The other day, I read about some effort to redesign hospital gowns so that patients don't feel too exposed. It doesn't sound that hard to me, even factoring in the desire to make them easy to don and doff.

My proposal: Velcro flaps. How's that sound?

Hmm, I'm not sure the elderly would be able to muster enough force to unfasten them. Then again, most of them would have trouble untying the existing string too, so your idea is no worse than the status quo.

You can get light-duty Velcro, maybe use that and just have more patches? I've been told that Velcro tends to grab things in the wash (don't know firsthand, but I plan for Velcro requiring costuming peices to have pieces of fuzzy cloth to put over the hook sides for washing) so it may try to turn into a big laundry knot. But it seems they *ought* to be able to do better, the status quo is awful.
