Yesterday I got snail mail from Faith and Action asking me to sign a set of cards (and, as an apparent afterthought, give money) to affirm that I want the Supreme Court to block "Nancy Pelosi's anti-religion agenda!" The letter clearly presupposes from my past contributions to other religious groups that I am a conservative, emphasizing Pelosi's San Francisco background and expecting me to be outraged at her opposition to "prayer in schools" (not just public schools?), "displaying the Ten Commandments in public" (anywhere?), "children praying during the War on Terrorism" (anytime?), and "even" the Pledge of Allegiance Protection Act.

This is not the first time that an organization has pegged me wrong, but what cracks me up is the timing. The very next piece of mail I opened was from Americans United for Separation of Church and State, asking me to support them against the teaching of intelligent design, the blockading of abortion clinics, and the permission for pharmacists to refuse to sell birth control for ethical reasons. The card shows half the Capitol Dome getting replaced with half a cathedral (not to scale).

FWIW, I didn't respond to them either.

I grow increasingly worried that the radical extremes are pushing everyone to the ends of the political spectrum, and that soon there will be no possibility of rational conversation between advocates of the opposing viewpoints. Both sides seem to have declared war on the moderate middle as well as their opponents.
