In the last couple days, I've seen two unrelated stories about men turning violent because they took people for zombies. Thankfully (assuming they were wrong), no one has been killed.

You may think it's a mania brought on by the closeness of Halloween, but I have another idea. Ever notice how many modern horrors have zombies, vampires, or other multiplying ex-humans made that way by a virus? Suppose instead that the virus caused people to see ordinary, uncostumed people as zombies or whatnot.

At least that would be a newish take on the subgenre.

Maybe it is they who are the zombies! Or maybe it's a widespread mental disease.
