When I transcribe, I tend to stop the video immediately and hit Google when I'm not sure how to spell a name. Sometimes I make a fool of myself by looking up information that I was just about to hear.

Today I was transcribing the last plenary session of the 2010 Access to Recovery Grantee Meeting (from February) and heard the name "Melora Hardin." I looked it up and thought, "She must use a different spelling. All I'm getting is this actress from 'The Office' and 10 episodes of 'Monk.'" But it was no mistake, and an unusually photogenic speaker came to the podium. She even made an in-joke: "Today I’m excited to get a little glimpse into your world and to give you a little glimpse into mine. For you 'Office' fans, 'that's what she said.'"

Why was she speaking at a conference on health reform? Well, she has judged and presented at the PRISM Awards, which are about depictions of substance abuse and mental health in movies and TV, and she'll present again on Thursday the 22nd. Her own main series got such an award, as did a movie I've seen in which she had a small role, Thank You for Smoking. Last year she directed and starred in You, which is not directly about substance abuse but covers circumstances that are often connected to it. Via PRISM, she got to know SAMHSA and other relevant organizations.

So how was she? A little bigger on use of the first person than most presenters, but that's to be expected. No less interesting, organized, or informative in my opinion, even acknowledging that health wasn't her field of expertise and she'd been uncertain about coming at first.

...You know, maybe I ought to give "The Office" another shot. I didn't sample it under optimal conditions, and even Roger Ebert never gave up as quickly as I did.
