Months ago, I learned that there was going to be a concert in town called Play!, featuring orchestral renditions of various video game themes accompanied by montages on a large screen. The effort to reach out to those who aren't game fans, as reported in a newspaper today, must be pretty successful if my mom showed some interest in attending. Unfortunately, tickets for decent seats were expensive, so I decided to rest on the idea. I saved the ad but didn't start thinking about it again until recently. The concert's tomorrow. Now I'm certain all the good seats are bought.

But sometimes procrastination works for the better. Yesterday, I got an email from Pat, who was my best friend at Oberlin but has been hard to keep in touch with since he started teaching in Japan. Pat has long had nebulous plans to drive around the U.S. in August to visit his old friends. Now, apologizing for short notice, he asked about spending a night at my house this Friday. He'll be on his way the next day. I agreed.

There's more luck to the timing. On most Friday nights nowadays, I go to a restaurant with my folks and then join them in some recreation at their house. Tomorrow, my mom will be taking my dad to the airport for a business trip to Iceland (quite enviable in the dog days of summer), so we were already postponing our get-together.

I'm not sure how easy it would have been to pawn tickets to this concert so late in the (eheh) game. I'd feel funny about asking around the office; as popular as video games are now, it seems embarrassing to confess that level of fandom to my coworkers.
