This story, while a downer, sounds familiar enough not to appall me. We really do mind our own business too much, especially where homeless people are concerned.
I hope editing Street Sense gets me more attuned to them.

I try to help, but it's hard to know who's not a fake. I've given money to one guy and he went straight to a bar. I gave two guys a ride...to a bar. I once gave money to a guy with nice clothes and sunglasses because he said his car was broken down. I saw a guy on TV that panhandled, then got in a brand new looking Jeep Cherokee. One of my Scouting friends helped out this bum in Westport, and found out that he lives with his sister, is not homeless.
I hear you're supposed to give them directions to places that have free food and shelter, but driving them there takes too much time and I always see people in need while I'm trying to arrive at work on time, so I can avoid becoming them.
