"Downscale" updates on Tuesdays and Fridays. I just learned that this Friday is Dialogue Free Comics Day. Hmm.
On one hand, I've often thought of making a dialogue-free, preferably text-free comic. On the other hand, I never considered doing it with "Downscale." Sure, it's been done for extensive periods in webcomics that normally rely on dialogue, but they've had more action in the first place. My slapstick is rare and still has dialogue for support.
Furthermore, the latest episode does not lend itself to a segue to silence. I suppose I could try a "meanwhile" strip involving Kody. Kind of ironic to choose the one human, from among the four main characters, not to talk. ("Little Dee" has an excuse.) But Kody isn't designed to be very interesting when he's not dealing with or thinking about Aspen. Do I fill his thought balloons with pictures? Do I show him doing something that I had no idea would be in character for him? Do I launch yet another dream sequence, this one not evidently incorporating the verbal portion of the brain?
If this Friday features wordless filler, you'll know why.
