Months ago, maybe even last year, I would occasionally get a recorded message from "Credit Card Services." The transparent scam seemed almost quaint and not really bothersome until the one time it reached my work phone.

Today I got a call from "Education Services," this time with a live person after a few seconds. Not sure why I stayed on as long as I did, even answering "How are you today?" with a suspicious "Fiiiine." Maybe I was hoping I misunderstood the situation. But when he said that my application was approved, I forwent my usual etiquette and hung up mid-sentence.

So far I've gotten six calls today (one while typing this message), no more of which I answered. They total five area codes that all turn out to be invalid according to 800 Notes. The two with the same area code even continue a simple pattern to the other seven digits. Only one was already registered at 800 Notes; apparently it was used for different scams before, going back more than six months.

Sometimes I think the most obnoxious thing about scammers is the way they insult my intelligence, however unintentionally. No doubt it takes only one fool for them to profit, but can't they tell I caught on?
