"Downscale" turns five
I kind of wanted to update "Downscale" today in honor of what's basically its fifth anniversary, but I got caught up in other stuff. Tune in for a regular Tuesday update having more to do with that than with Valentine's Day.
The comic has persevered longer than I've predicted at times, but I'm not especially proud. For all I know, my mom's the only person who reads it on a regular basis. Younger comics by younger cartoonists have gotten far more attention, sometimes with what I consider worse art, worse writing, and/or a worse update schedule.
This comes in part from me treating "Downscale" as a hobby from the start. Yes, it tends to feel like a not-so-fun obligation, but not necessarily to the readers. If nothing else, it ensures that I do something more creative and productive each week than watch movies or play video games. I refuse to give it up until I decide on a regular alternative, whether another comic or something in another medium.
I realize this is an unusually downbeat milestone announcement, so let me add that I do like my animal characters and expect to miss them someday. The humans, not so much.
